A sibling legacy set in "Stone"

Tayla Stone spent her younger years down at the Rotorua Touch competition playing with her cousins at the creek while her whanau were on the field.

Watching her brothers play became a pastime, and it wasn’t all too soon before she declared her goal was to one day play for her country too.

A bold statement, but she did just that. Tayla booted up for her first International debut at the 2020 Youth Trans-Tasman for the NZ Under 20 Women.

Shaquille Stone, Touch Blacks Open Men’s player of 10 years, is proud of the achievements of his younger sibling.

“It’s awesome to see her getting recognised. I never pushed her to follow in our footsteps but tried to guide her to become her own player.”

Growing up in a community like Rotorua has definitely played its part in their success.

“They’ve been nothing but supportive and it’s an honour to represent the Bay” said Shaquille. A journey he’d like to repay them for by winning a National title in the blue and gold.

Both Tayla and Shaquille joined the 07 Heat squad for the 2020 Premier Touch League.

With majority of the squad hailing from the Waikato region, the Stones have been given the opportunity to play alongside players that they wouldn’t normally get the chance to.

“It was a challenge to step out of my comfort zone and make new friends, but the girls were welcoming and now it feels like we’ve been playing together for ages” stated Tayla.

On field connections are evident, with the 07 Heat Women top contenders for a spot in the Grand Final next weekend.

When asked where to next, the response was unwavering from the duo.

Shaquille’s goal is to stay in the Touch Blacks Men’s programme until the next World Cup although he understands the work required.

“I never take my spot for granted, I’ve got to earn the right to wear that singlet every season.”

For Tayla, she has her sights set on the Touch Blacks Women’s team as well as a World Cup.

“To make it while Shaq is still playing, and maybe Moss will make a comeback in 30 Mens,” she laughed “that would be the dream.”
